Musk vs. Altman: The Trial Nobody Asked For, But Everybody Will Watch

Remember when Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI, then stormed out because he didn’t get to be CEO? Good times. Now he’s back with a lawsuit, and a trial kicks off in Oakland on April 27th. On paper, it’s about whether OpenAI defrauded Musk. In reality? This is about mess.

Musk’s legal theories have been all over the map. Breach of contract. Unfair business practices. False advertising. He’s basically throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. And now he and Sam Altman will be sitting in a courtroom, at a time when neither of them needs this distraction.

Let’s be honest: this isn’t about legal principles. Musk wanted control of OpenAI, didn’t get it, and has been nursing that grudge ever since. Altman, meanwhile, has been running the show his way, building partnerships and products that Musk clearly sees as a threat or a betrayal.

The timing is terrible for both of them. OpenAI is under regulatory scrutiny globally, and Musk’s own companies are facing their own headaches. But here we are, about to watch two of the most powerful egos in tech duke it out in front of a judge.

I’ve seen this pattern before. Musk sues, makes a lot of noise, and often walks away with a settlement or a symbolic win. But this time feels different. The stakes are higher, the personal animosity is more visible, and the public is paying attention.

What I’m curious about is whether any real evidence of fraud will surface. Musk’s claims have always felt thin—more about hurt feelings than actual deception. But discovery might turn up something embarrassing for Altman or the board. That’s the real drama: not the verdict, but the dirty laundry.

Either way, this trial is going to be a circus. Musk will perform, Altman will try to look reasonable, and the rest of us will watch the trainwreck. I’m not expecting a clear winner. I’m expecting a lot of headlines, a lot of memes, and maybe a settlement right before closing arguments.

One thing’s for sure: the Musk-Altman feud isn’t going away. This trial is just the latest chapter in a saga that’s been brewing for years. And as messy as it is, I can’t look away.
